LEGAL / SOURCE CODE
Open-source code for NutsEmu
NutsEmu and the NutsEmu Companion use libraries licensed under the GNU LGPL. Here you can download, for every build we have distributed, the complete source of those libraries, every change we made to them, and the scripts and settings we built them with. Free, no login, no Patreon membership needed.

What is and isn't here
This page carries what the LGPL requires: the LGPL libraries, our changes to them and how we built them. Our changes
to Wine, including NutsSync (NutsEmu's in-process synchronization) and the iOS compatibility layer compiled into Wine,
are published here under the GNU LGPL 2.1 or later. DXMT's winemetal.dll contains part of Wine's
winecrt0 library, so its object files are here too, for relinking. The rest of NutsEmu's own code (the
app, its drivers and the Companion) is proprietary and isn't published. Other components such as FEX-Emu, DXMT,
Mesa, MoltenVK and FreeType are under permissive licenses (MIT, Apache-2.0, FTL) that don't require source code to be
shared. Their notices and license texts are on the Licenses page.
02 / WRITTEN OFFER
Written offer
NutsEmu and NutsEmu Companion contain software licensed under the GNU Lesser General Public
License version 2.1 (Wine, vkd3d-proton, GnuTLS, libtasn1, apple-codesign-quick) and version 3
(Nettle, mini-GMP, libunistring). Copies of those licenses and of the GNU GPL version 3 are in the
licenses/ folder and on our Licenses page.
Where to get the source now. The complete corresponding machine-readable source code of these
components for this build, with every change we made to them, the build scripts and configuration
used, and the materials needed to relink our modules with modified versions of these libraries
(including the object files of DXMT's winemetal.dll, which contains Wine's winecrt0), is
available at no charge from:
https://nutsdeveloping.com/source
Find your build number in the table there. NutsEmu's packages end in -<build number>.tar.xz;
the Companion's is
apple-codesign-quick-0.1.0-nutsemu-companion-<Companion version>.tar.xz.
Written offer. For at least three (3) years after we last distribute this build, we will give anyone who received it (and, for the LGPL-3 components, anyone who has a copy of the object code) a complete copy of those materials on request. We will deliver them as a download, or on a physical medium for a charge no more than our cost of performing the distribution. Write to [email protected] and name the NutsEmu build number (shown in Settings → About and in the Companion).
Your rights. You may modify these libraries, rebuild them, replace them in the app, and re-sign the app with your own Apple ID. The NutsEmu license permits that and permits reverse engineering for debugging such modifications. See "How to replace a library" below.
How to replace a library in NutsEmu (summary; full steps in RELINKING.md in the nutsemu-lgpl-build-<build number> package)
- Download the source for your build from https://nutsdeveloping.com/source, apply your changes, and build with the
included scripts (the same toolchain versions are listed in
BUILD-INFO.md). - Unzip
NutsEmu.ipaand replace the library inPayload/NutsEmu.app/lib/wine*/…(e.g.aarch64-unix/libgnutls.30.dylib,aarch64-windows/*.dll,aarch64-unix/*.so). Replace it in everylib/wine*instance folder. - Re-sign the app (and its
PlugIns/andExtensions/extensions) with your own Apple ID or developer certificate. You can use Xcode or any sideloading tool. Then install.
Statutory text (for reference)
- LGPL-2.1 §6(c): "Accompany the work with a written offer, valid for at least three years, to give the same user the materials specified in Subsection 6a, above, for a charge no more than the cost of performing this distribution."
- LGPL-2.1 §6(d): "If distribution of the work is made by offering access to copy from a designated place, offer equivalent access to copy the above specified materials from the same place."
- GPL-3 §6(d) (applied through LGPL-3 §4(d)): "…the Corresponding Source may be on a different server (operated by you or a third party) that supports equivalent copying facilities, provided you maintain clear directions next to the object code saying where to find the Corresponding Source. Regardless of what server hosts the Corresponding Source, you remain obligated to ensure that it is available for as long as needed to satisfy these requirements."
